The Church at Fort Jones

What is the Church?

Here in Fort Jones, church is described in a lot of ways, usually thought of as a building where we go to meet with other folks and worship Christ. In the Bible, the church is described as the the called out from among those who are called by Christ. That’s another way of saying the church are all those who have Jesus Christ as Lord.

When folks talk about churches, they’re really talking about styles of worship, core belief systems, and the people that hold to those systems. We wanted to start a Calvary Chapel church in Fort Jones because we saw a need that wasn’t being addressed.

There’s nothing wrong with a Sunday sermon, or a Sunday School lesson, or even a talk, but I grew with the Calvary style teaching for decades, and really missed gathering with other believers to study chapter by chapter through entire books of the Bible. Here in Fort Jones, there’s no other fellowship that we know of that follows that model. That’s where we see a need. A need for something a little different than what’s already going on.

We’re not making ourselves out to be better, just different. Why, a lot of the preaching that has gone on in this country for the last 238 plus years has been sermons, messages, lessons, and talks. Open air, tent, revival, and camp meetings too. We like to think that one of the best ways to learn what God wants for our lives, the doctrine that we need, is to proceed through an entire book of the Bible at a time. We learn the context of what was going on, and we learn how it might apply to our own lives at the moment.

We try to keep worship simple, but we’re open to more. Right now, we just have guitar and piano/keyboard, maybe God will bring along a few more folks that want to do more.
